Orchestra Philharmonique de Liege, conducted by Pierre Bartholomee. IV. Allegro moderato Schubert's truly "unfinished symphony", as his death seems to be the only reason it was not completed. The work survives in a partly fragmentary piano sketch. Only properly identified in the 1970s, it has been orchestrated by Brian Newbould in a conjectural completion that has subsequently been performed, published and recorded. Pierre Bartholomee poured over Newbould's orchestration, and his determination was that Newbould, out of respect for Schubert had been almost too timid and modest. Bartholomee takes into account the orchestral models of the late 1820s-Schubert, with their important place given to the winds, the melodic use of trombones, and the antiphony between the instrumental groups which herald Bruckner. Whilst scrupulously respecting the form and structure of Newbould's version, Bartholomee achieves far more vigor and coloring.
