Hi! Welcome to the January 2012 addition of the Asset Management Strategies newsletter. We had quite a great January to start out the year; in fact, it was the best January that the stock market has had in 15 years. We had a nice steady climb throughout the month and the stock market and I think it was not necessarily because of any particular good news but just a lack of bad news in general. There is a thing called the January effect and the theory of the January effect says that whatever happens in January foretells what the market is going to do for the balance of the year. I think that's a little bit like saying whoever scores the first touchdown in football is more likely statistically to win the game. That's interesting, but I don't know that that's real useful and it doesn't seem to pan out as far as any predictive capability for what the market is going to do for the balance of the year, but we're off to a good start. We'll sure take it. The improving economic data we saw across the board with the labor market figures, the consumers spending, manufacturing, inflation looks in check, seems to be doing well but I think if you ask the average person that most people would be in agreement that the pace of this recovery is a little bit slower than what we'd like and I think that that collective mentality explains why the volume is so low in this market recovery that we're seeing and because I think most people really aren't thrilled with where the economy is and even ...
