Bulareyaung Pagarlava is an indigenous choreographer from the Paiwan Tribe in Taiwan. He began his dance training at the age of 15, and started choreographing in college. Upon graduation from the Dance Department of the Taipei National University of Arts in 1996, Bulareyaung performed a solo concert, which received extensive praise, as it was the first among aspiring choreographers/dancers of such young age in Taiwan. Bulareyaung rejoined the Cloud Gate Dancer Theatre of Taiwan in 2000 and toured with the company to the US, Europe, Australia, and China. He was also appointed as the Resident Choreographer for Cloud Gate 2 between 2004 and 2006. He received a Performing Arts Fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council in 1998 and given residency experience in 2007 at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York and the International Choreographer's Residency Program of American Dance Festival in 2008. In 2007, Bulareyaung and Fang-Yi Sheu founded the LAFA & Artists Dance Company which presented his works internationally at the Fall for Dance Festival in New York , Jacob's Pillow, Macau Dance Festival, Vancouver Cultural Olympiad 2010, and WOMADelaide Australia, among others. In May 2009, Martha Graham Dance Company first commissioned Pagarlava and premiered his version of Lamentation Variation and also "Chasing" in 2011 at Lincoln Center Rose Theatre. He was also commissioned to produce a piece in the American Dance Festival in June 2011.
